About GOAT Day

The purpose of GOAT Day is to bring awareness to invasive honeysuckle on Maryville’s campus. Maryville uses goats as a tool and an opportunity to engage the community in ecological management.

 How did GOAT Day begin?

Beginning in 2012, the students in the Krakos Lab began research on the environmental management for invasive honeysuckle. They investigated the effectiveness of a variety of management methods including girdling, cutting, spraying, pulling, and grazing. They found that grazing by goats was the most effective management tool and the most fun.

Goats are a great ecological management tool. They diminish the need for herbicides, reduce bio-waste, and they are a great way to teach about invasive plant species. Learn more about why goats are your best friend in the garden.

GOAT Day is coordinated by the undergraduate students in the Sustainability 150 class at Maryville University with assistance of the professors: Dr. Nadine Ball and Dr. Kyra Krakos.

Each Year GOAT Day looks a little different, because students are encouraged to add their own style and be creative with the project.

Maryville Honeysuckle Project

GOAT Day is an extension of the Maryville Honeysuckle project, the goal of which is to restore native ecosystems, reduce bio-waste, develop products from invasive species, and promote community education and involvement.

GOAT Day is held on the Maryville University Campus every spring during Earth Week. The goats are brought to campus to eat honeysuckle. Visitors can pet goats, get garden tips, learn about native species, and participate in crafts.

This year, the Sustainability 150 students, have worked very hard to maintain the enthusiasm of GOAT Day during present conditions. We hope you enjoy Maryville’s very first virtual GOAT day!
